Kristen’s Pick: Catherine Barrier-NJ Assembly, District 17
Catherine found me, for such a time as this.
My mother’s name is Catherine.
My father’s mother’s name is Esther. It’s her birthday today.
Before my first protest responding to the school reopening plans in February 2021, a mentor of mine printed out a verse for me. My co-worker Lew, a former Rabbi and lawyer and I had been long seeing signs of rising communism, socialism and totalitarianism in our State and Federal governments. He was raised in Israel. His wife volunteered to fight in the Six Day War.
I had just talked to my father’s mother, Esther on Valentine’s Day in 2021. I was distressed at her state of captivity.
The world’s problems felt too great a burden to bear in my mind. I remembered that I could only help what I could control, and I set my sights on the most local issue plaguing my heart: my son’s masked attendance in hybrid public school.
Lew listened to my plans, my angst, and my tears. In late February, he came to me with a printed verse from the Book of Esther, not knowing the personal connection I had to that name, and not realizing that I had just saved a post from Scott Walker on that topic!
I had my call.
I made my plans, for such a time as this.
And then Catherine appeared. She was ready and willing to jump right in to support parents at a rally in Somerset this weekend to protest the hypocrisy of the NJEA gathering while children are suffering.
I was already sold.
And then I saw her campaign slogan… “for such a time as this”…it was meant to be that we would cross paths.

Kristen: Who are you?
Catherine: Hello, I'm Catherine Barrier, and I'm running for State Assembly in District 17 (Franklin, Milltown, New Brunswick, North Brunswick & Piscataway) this year.
Kristen: Why are you running?
Catherine: I am running for State Assembly at this crucial time here in New Jersey--to be able to help us get back to good government that works for the people, keeps us free, and safeguards us here in New Jersey from the many wrong policies coming at us from the federal government in this "current administration".
Kristen: What is your stance on parental choice for medical freedom in schools?
Catherine: I am for parental choice, medical freedom, and all the rights and freedoms afforded to We the People under the U.S. Constitution and its 27 amendments.
Kristen: What is your favorite amendment?
Catherine: All of them!
