We are excited to share the first of MANY school board candidate spotlights. This particular candidate drew my attention for many reasons, but most importantly, because of his impressive scientific knowledge and background. As Boards of Education are being tasked with the incredible burden of sifting through cutting-edge research and data, Chris Hackett is just the asset needed to help a BOE confidently make important policies to protect and serve the public education community.
Kristen’s pick: Christopher Hackett for Clinton Township Board of Education
Kristen: Who are you?
Chris: My name is Chris Hackett and I live in Clinton Township, NJ with my wife and two children, ages 4 and 2. I am a Dominican/Irish American who has lived in NJ my entire life, and am a product of public schools myself, to which I owe much of my success. I have a Master's Degree in Biotechnology and Genomics, and currently work for a global biomarker laboratory that provides testing to Pharmaceutical companies that are running clinical trials.
Kristen: Why are you running?
Chris I am running because I believe that after two years, it is time for our children's lives to return to normal. I have watched on the sidelines as the media has misinterpreted science and spurred fear, which has crippled our ability to provide normalcy for our children. Almost no other nation in the world masks primary school students, and it is time to end that practice here. In addition, I believe that our Board of Education in Clinton Township should be balanced with an array of perspectives on matters outside of pandemic issues as well - including how to deal with declining enrollment and supporting our children with the most appropriate curriculum.
Kristen: What is your stance on parental choice for medical freedom in schools?
Chris: I believe that is it the parent's decision to provide medical interventions for their children, and that the school should address even planned discussions around interventions with the parents before having them with the children. I would support policies that do not allow administration to pressure students into medical interventions.
Kristen: What is your favorite amendment?
Chris: The second amendment, because without it, none of the others will be around forever.
Kristen: Give me your best pitch on why and how we can support your campaign?
Chris: Why: Because I am a father and scientist speaking out in a time when "science" is being weaponized against our children and our people. I understand the science and the data behind this pandemic and can use it to ease fear rather than propagate it. I want to help lead us out of this fear-induced fog of war starting with helping our children. Also, as a mixed-race American who is very conservative, I fly in the face of many of the advocates of CRT and other social issues that should not be in our schools - and these things will matter if/when the pandemic is eventually over.
How: Spreading the word locally (and elsewhere) and getting my videos out around the State to hopefully help connect with other like-minded people, particularly scientists who can help build more credibility to the movement.
