Marlboro BOE Scandal Exposes Deep Ethical Breakdown
When the ‘trusted adults’ in our schools betray that trust, it’s up to parents to demand better.
During the July 22nd Marlboro Township Public School (K-8) Board of Education (BOE) meeting, former BOE member Aldo Patruno observed BOE candidate Scott Semaya seated in front of him, holding a cell phone that displayed a shocking private group text chat titled “This Bitch Needs to Die.” Recognizing the seriousness of what he saw, Patruno photographed the message as a security measure to document the disturbing conversation.
The chat, reportedly aimed at another female board member and mother of three, went far beyond inappropriate humor or political banter — it was a direct, targeted act of malice. The fact that this message was visible and active during a public meeting in which the targeted colleague was present amplifies its threatening nature.
Even more disturbing, posts on a local resident’s Facebook page allege that four other men — Chad Hyett (current BOE Vice President), Mitesh Gandhi (husband of current BOE member Aditi Gandhi), Nirav Kadakia (a 2024 BOE candidate who was not elected), and Lenny Thor (former public school teacher in special education and husband of current Marlboro Educational Foundation (MEF) Treasurer Alicia Thor, as listed on the MEF website) — all participated in the group chat with Scott Semaya. The messages reportedly contained sexually demeaning comments about the female board member, crudely referring to her body while engaging in a thread that called for her death. Such vulgarity and misogyny among individuals connected to public office, particularly school board officials entrusted with the education and safety of children, represents a profound moral collapse.
The profound hypocrisy allegedly demonstrated by these officials is precisely what fuels the parental rights movement, raising the inescapable question of how the board can possibly enforce its own strict Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (H.I.B.) policy on students and staff when the leaders themselves are engaging in electronic communication that includes death threats and sexual harassment. By actively creating a hostile environment and violating the very standards they are sworn to uphold, these board members entirely forfeit the moral authority required to govern the school district, proving that the policies are viewed as rules for the governed rather than binding ethical standards for the governing, thereby validating the community’s demand for radical transparency and immediate accountability.
Following the exposure of the chat, Scott Semaya and his running mate Melissa Goldberg effectively withdrew from the 2025 BOE election, with Semaya’s campaign collapsing under public scrutiny.
Current BOE Vice President Chad Hyett, however has yet to resign. Because this alleged malicious electronic communication reportedly took place during a board function, his phone and all related communications should be subject to a thorough investigation through OPRA (Open Public Record’s Act) to determine the extent of his involvement and compliance with ethics rules governing public business. If a member of Board leadership is suspected of participating in a private, hostile plot against a colleague while engaged in official duties, a complete forensic examination is the only way to restore integrity and ensure that the cancer of misconduct is fully removed from the district’s governance.
Additional evidence, specifically the Facebook screenshot from last year, documents an exchange where Board of Education Vice President Chad Michael Hyett used highly inappropriate and contemptuous language, stating that “Danielle looks awful” and “Aldo looks like a serial killer.” This occurred while urging that images be taken down, framing his opinion as focusing on “EDUCATION.” He later issued an inadequate, partial apology, failing to retract the disparaging remark about Danielle.
The Marlboro Educational Foundation (MEF), a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that operates independently from the school district, has yet to comment on the scandal, even as the wife of one alleged participant, in the chat, remains the sitting Treasurer.
Board member Aditi Gandhi has an ethical obligation to publicly denounce her husband’s behavior in the chat or, if she possesses direct knowledge, state definitively that he was not included. The failure of a spouse who is also an elected official to condemn written death threats and sexual harassment directed at a colleague signals a deeply concerning tolerance for such malignancy. If the Board is to regain even a shred of moral authority, every member, including Gandhi, must clearly and publicly state where they stand on harassment and intimidation perpetrated by those connected to the district’s leadership.
Superintendent Michael Ballone should also issue a public statement denouncing the alleged conduct and, extend the same level of protection to his board colleague that he typically affords his teachers. His failure to act immediately and decisively would be a profound display of institutional hypocrisy. Specifically, Ballone should take disciplinary action equal to past precedents, such as the enforcement of school Policy 9202, which he has previously used to ban parents from school grounds for violating behavioral standards. If the district imposes strict bans on parents for lesser conduct, the Superintendent is ethically obligated to hold his own leadership to an equal, if not higher, standard.
This incident underscores a troubling national trend: the erosion of civility and decency in American politics, even at the local level. What should be an arena of collaboration and community service has devolved into a battlefield of personal attacks and intimidation. When public officials engage in threats and sexualized harassment against colleagues, it is not merely politics as usual, it is a moral and ethical crisis that demands immediate redress.
Even more disturbing is that these very individuals are entrusted to make decisions for our children and operate within a system that tells families schools are filled with “trusted adults”… adults who, under policies such as Policy 5756, may even conceal children’s personal disclosures from their parents. The hypocrisy is staggering: those deemed “trusted” by the system have shown themselves unworthy of even the most basic trust of the community they claim to serve.
This incident should serve as a wake-up call to every parent and voter: it is absolutely vital to research and vet the people running for Board of Education positions, because these individuals hold tremendous influence over our children’s education, safety, and values.
