Could I use an OPRA request to find out which special interest groups funded or otherwise enabled various school board candidate campaigns? Do successful candidates need to disclose financial support?

no since this would have been them as candidates and not public officials. You can however, go to https://www.njelecefilesearch.com/SearchContributionByEntity and look up contributions. By law, candidates are supposed to file any contribution over $300, whether they win or lose.

If you have reason to believe they received a contribution but didn't file it, you can file a complaint with nj elec.

Well you would have to look up the NJEA because they're the ones who are sponsoring special interest candidates for boe election. They have been doing it for years. Previously 7 out of 10 board members were from the njea
